Work in English, life in Portuguese
Did you spend the day explaining projects, code, deadlines, and decisions in English?
Perhaps you lead meetings, negotiate priorities, and solve complex problems in English. That doesn't mean you need to choose words in a second language when the subject is fear, belonging, relationships, or the direction of your own life.
In psychotherapy, you can speak using your cultural references, humor, and the nuances that are part of your story.
You don't need to translate your life to be understood.
Questions that may appear together
- Meetings, feedback, and professional decisions in another language
- Pressure to deliver, performance and career growth
- Hybrid work, commutes, and little transition time
- Difficulty turning off after work
- Loneliness despite being surrounded by people
- Distance from family and building new relationships
The experience of living in London
A city full of possibilities can also take up too much space.
London brings together a wide range of people, cultures, opportunities, and career paths. At the same time, a routine filled with work, commuting, commitments, and everyday tasks can leave little room to notice how you are actually living.
The cost of living can influence choices about housing and career. Friendships may be scattered across distant neighborhoods. The shorter winter days can change the way people occupy the city. For some, the calendar is full; for others, it is difficult to turn occasional meetings into a support network.
None of this means that living in London is necessarily a problem. The clinical question is to understand how this concrete city relates to your history, your choices, and the kind of life you wish to build.
International career
When competence, language, and belonging seem mixed
Work in global teams
In technology and other international sectors, a conversation can bring together people with different accents, references, and ways of disagreeing. Not understanding a phrase immediately or needing to reorganize an explanation does not define your competence—but it may be interpreted that way by someone who is already holding themselves to a high standard.
Psychotherapy can examine the difference between what happened, the meaning assigned to the situation, and the response that followed.
Performance and safety
Promotions, restructuring, contracts, job changes, and migration issues can make professional decisions carry significant personal consequences. Concrete concerns do not need to be treated as irrational thoughts.
Clinical work considers reality, available resources, and how you have been responding to them. Legal, financial, and immigration matters should be addressed by professionals in the relevant fields.
Before deciding
Start with a 15-minute conversation
The initial conversation is free and allows you to get to know my practice, ask practical questions, and assess whether moving forward is possible. It is not a psychotherapy session, psychological evaluation, or emergency care.
You don't need to tell your entire story in this meeting. At the end, you can decide with peace of mind whether you wish to schedule the first session.
Beyond Work
A life is not organized solely by one's career
Emotional relationships, friendships, family, rest, and belonging can also enter the conversation. A couple may experience moving to a new country at different paces. Someone living alone may feel a lack of intimacy even while maintaining an active social schedule. Those who have built a stable life may continue to have doubts about staying or returning.
You do not need to be in crisis or have a diagnosis to seek psychotherapy. The process can also help you understand patterns, work through changes, and make decisions with greater awareness of what is at stake.
Psychotherapy may address
Anxiety, self-imposed pressure, difficulty resting, relationships, loneliness, cultural adaptation, professional conflicts, career choices, distance from family, and uncertainty about the coming years.
This list offers examples, not diagnoses. The starting point is what makes sense in your experience.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
How these experiences can be addressed
In CBT, we investigate the relationship between situations, interpretations, emotions, and behaviors. We also take into account your history, your relationships, your work environment, and the concrete conditions in which you live.
Imagine that, after an English meeting, you think: "I couldn't express myself; now they're going to question my ability." This interpretation can increase anxiety, prolong the mental review of the conversation, and influence the next meeting.
Research before concluding
The aim is not to replace a “negative” idea with a “positive” one. We can examine what happened, what evidence there is, what the situation means to you, and what responses are possible.
The process is collaborative and tailored to the issues brought forward by each individual.
Professional Experience
A psychologist who understands the technology industry from the inside
I am Alexandre Bartoli, Psychologist, CRP 04/86889My background includes a degree in Information Systems, a master's degree in Operations Research and Artificial Intelligence, approximately ten years of experience as a developer, and teaching experience in the technology field.
This experience facilitates understanding contexts such as code reviews, incidents, on-call shifts, tool changes, deliveries, and distributed teams. In psychotherapy, however, you are not reduced to your role: the focus is on your story and what you wish to work on.

Frequently asked questions
Information before first contact
Is the service provided in person in London?
No. The service is available exclusively online. I am a psychologist registered in Brazil, and the availability of the service is verified based on the conditions applicable to your location of residence.
Do I need to work with technology?
No. I have private practice experience in this field, but I work with adults from other areas. Work, relationships, family, and life changes can all be part of the process.
How does the free initial conversation work?
It is a 15-minute meeting to get to know my working style, answer any questions, and discuss the logistics for a possible start. It is not psychotherapy, a psychological assessment, a diagnostic screening, or an emergency service.
My English is good. Does it still make sense to have therapy in Portuguese?
You can. Professional fluency does not eliminate the preference for processing personal experiences in the language in which specific memories, relationships, and reference points were formed. This is a personal choice, not a measure of your adaptation.
Can I have psychotherapy without a diagnosis?
Yes. Seeking help may be related to specific difficulties, decisions, relationships, or a desire to understand patterns. The need for other types of evaluation or care can be discussed throughout the process.
How are the appointment times coordinated?
The schedule is organized according to London local time, taking into account the changes between GMT and British Summer Time. Available options are presented when you get in touch.
Does psychotherapy replace emergency care?
No. This service is not an emergency service. If you are in immediate danger in the UK, call 999 or seek local emergency services. For free emotional support, The Samaritans can be reached at 116 123.
